We are often asked about selecting the correct welding helmet and proper shade for the different types of welding. There are so many different brands, types, and styles of welding helmets that the task of selecting the "right" one can be daunting.
Auto-darkening helmets can be make the task easier by allowing you to see the work before striking an arc, and avoiding the welder's "head snap" used to close a traditional mask.
Stick, MIG, and TIG welding require a shade of 9-13 (depending on the power or amperage of the welding task). Light duty cutting and grinding goggles should never be used for welding as they do not provide the proper protection.
