Selecting the Proper Welding Helmet (Shade)

We are often asked about selecting the correct welding helmet and proper shade for the different types of welding.  There are so many different brands, types, and styles of welding helmets that the task of selecting the "right" one can be daunting.

Engman-Taylor is a full-line 3M distributor and we would be happy to help you select and fit a proper welding helmet.

Auto-darkening helmets can be make the task easier by allowing you to see the work before striking an arc, and avoiding the welder's "head snap" used to close a traditional mask.

Stick, MIG, and TIG welding require a shade of 9-13 (depending on the power or amperage of the welding task).  Light duty cutting and grinding goggles should never be used for welding as they do not provide the proper protection.  Contact Engman-Taylor or your local welding supply house with additional questions.

There are plenty of additional sources and information online.  Here are few good places to start:

3M has a wealth of information online, start with their Welding Safety page
Or check out this handy 3M Speedglas welding helmet selection guide. (pdf)
Miller also has a terrific welding helmet selection guide online.

NEW - WIHA Cable (Zip) Tie Cutters (Flush Cutting Diagonal Cutters)

WIHA Flush Cutting Diagonal Cutters

These new cable tie cutters from WIHA work so well that we had to put them on the blog.

I had a chance to try these out the other day, on a few medium sized zip ties and I was very impressed.  I cut a lot of zip ties; and I have used everything from a scissor, to a side cutters, to a box cutter.  These cutters take very little effort, are ergonomically designed, and leave an unbelievably smooth cut.  They cut so flush that you can barely detect the cut-off with your finger.  A typical side cutter leaves behind a sharp protruding piece (that's not only sharp but unsightly).  Sounds pretty basic, I know, but if you cut a lot of cable ties or care about the finish look of your end product then you'll appreciate the beauty in these cutters.

If you trim plastic or cut zip ties; give these pliers a try.  These are sure to be the best plastic cutters you have ever used - and they are under $25!

Light weight, clean cutting, long life flush cutting pliers with spring return.
